Overview

Los protozoos parásitos producen el 90% de la carga de enfermedad en el mundo y afectan especialmente poblaciones pobres de zonas tropicales o intertropicales siendo las mujeres y los niños los que más la sufren. Este tipo de enfermedades están asociadas a servicios sanitarios no adecuados, a malas condiciones de vivienda, poco acceso a los servicios de salud y al abandono estatal. Paradójicamente, sólo se les asigna el 10% de los recursos invertidos en investigación y se clasifican como enfermedades huérfanas “desatendidas”, tanto por los gobiernos como por las grandes industrias farmacéuticas. Esto perpetúa el círculo vicioso de no estudio – no cuantificación real del problema – menor visibilidad – menor recursos adjudicados para combatirlas.
